I've found that a 48 hr soak of Vitis seeds in peroxide (H2O2) allows freshly harvested seed to germinate without pre-chilling.
Peroxide Soak - 93% germination
Control - 9% germination
It has been thought that pre-chilling was necessary to break dormancy in Vitis. But Chris Walters at the NCGRP believes that dormancy is not the issue here. She believes that the oxygen given off during the peroxide soak stimulates the after-ripening metabolic pathways.
I have compiled a list of woody perennial genera that have similar under developed embryos like Vitis and am now experimenting to see if peroxide has an effect on them.
Has anyone else used peroxide to stimulate germination? If so, what genera or species have you found peroxide useful?
